When a student first learns the Heian kata it might simply be to get a new grade. As they go on they may lose sight of why Heian Shodan, that simplest of the "family" is useful. John Burke sensei here illustrates why the proper use of hips not only frees the defender but also exposes the correct targets on the attacker.
